Let me start by first wishing each and every woman, a Happy Women’s Day. May your day be filled with light, love and happiness and may the years ahead be bright, courageous and full of amazing miracles for each and every one of you reading this.
August 9th is National Women’s Day in South Africa, but the entire month is considered Women’s month. We acknowledge and celebrate all women from different walks of life, those who have experienced hardships, persevered, believed in themselves and overcame adversity. I feel that this celebration of women should happen everyday.
Being a woman is truly such an amazing gift, one which we need to acknowledge, accept and appreciate. We get to experience some absolutely magical things in life that men don’t. We get to experience, very intimately, every part of being female from childhood, adulthood, giving birth to life and becoming a mother. We have super powers! We really do. We are able to do many amazing things in a day, from thought to action, from the time we wake to the time we fall asleep again, a lot of which we don’t give ourselves enough credit or acknowledgement for. We are absolutely amazing beings and we become even more amazing when we’re working this gift as a collective versus working against each other, working for each other rather than working for ourselves.
Yes I know that this is not ideal for every woman, but by constantly living in the negative you are not helping yourself. Rather embrace your role in life as a woman and find ways to always be an inspiration to others, even if it’s just your family.
The rise of bringing women to equality is slowly picking up. The rise of women finding their voices and speaking up against domestic & gender based violence, sexual harassment, bullying, bigotry, and corporate inequalities are also rising. But it is not enough. We need to keep up this fight and support each other for the right reasons. We need to realize that we are strong as individuals but even stronger when we come together. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. And therefore we need to find our inner voice and speak up for the right reasons. “Remember that feminism is not about making women stronger. Women are already strong. It’s about changing the way the world perceives that strength.” – G.D. Anderson. Do not settle for anything less than you deserve. Believe in yourself and believe that you’re capable of doing anything you put your mind to.
I am truly inspired by the many women who surround me. Their strength, resilience and compassion is what moves me and wills me to be better than I am today. Michelle Obama says it quite nicely – “There is no limit to what we as women can achieve.” I have seen this in the women around me as well as in myself. I had moments in my life where I had self-doubt, lacked self-confidence, felt unworthy of anything and just felt completely useless. I was bullied and treated as if I was inferior, which led to those feelings time and time again. But I managed to rise above it all. I found inspiration through people, music and nature. I found reason to stand up for myself and to believe in myself again. I found my voice and as I made my voice heard, I realized that I wasn’t alone. I found comfort in knowing there were others, and that by standing together, we found solutions. If there is anything that you are going through that feels wrong, know that you can overcome it. Don’t allow that inner voice to speak negatively to you. Shut it out instantly. Find that role model, song, or moment of inspiration to help you through it in order to achieve your best and be your best. May we always find the courage to speak up and act against injustices.
